Georgia forward Asa Newell named to Freshman All-SEC team
Georgia has all but punched its ticket to the NCAA tournament and freshman forward Asa Newell has helped lead the way. The Bulldogs’ leading scorer was acknowledged on Monday by being named to the Freshman All-SEC team as voted on by league coaches.
It makes two straight seasons that the Bulldogs have had someone named to the list. Sophomore guard Silas Demary Jr. was named to the team last year. Newell is the 15th Bulldog to earn a spot on the coaches’ Freshman All-SEC team. He has also earned SEC Freshman of The Week four times on the year, matching Anthony Edwards’ total from his lone season in Athens.
Newell is averaging 15.1 points per game for the Bulldogs and he also leads the team in rebounding at 6.5 per game. He has started all 31 contests to date Newell has led the Bulldogs in scoring in 19 games and he has served as the top rebounder in 14 of those contests. He missed out on the SEC Freshman of the Year honor, which went to Texas guard Tre Johnson.
Johnson was also named to the Freshman All-SEC team along with Auburn guard Tahaad Pettiford, Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears, and Alabama guard Labaron Philon.

Those scoring and rebounding numbers rank him No. 16 and No. 13 in the conference, respectively. Newell also ranks No. 3 in field goal percentage and No. 3 in offensive rebounds per game. Georgia is 20-11 on the season, marking just the sixth time in 119 seasons that Georgia has reached 20 wins in the regular season. The Bulldogs did that against arguably the toughest league in the history of the sport. The SEC has a shot to get over a dozen teams into the NCAA tournament and it will likely have at least four teams that earn either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Big Dance.
Georgia currently has a NCAA NET ranking of No. 30 with four wins against Quad 1 opponents. It’s next test will come on Wednesday night when, as the No. 11 seed in the SEC Tournament, the Bulldogs take on Oklahoma. Tip is expected to be around 9:30 p.m. ET.
