Brian Harman and Russell Henley started the U.S. Open with a bang. Then, they diverged down two different paths on The Country Club’s score card.

Harman finished his opening round at -2, which was good for one shot off Rory McIlroy’s lead at the time I hit ‘publish’ on this article.

Meanwhile, Henley and group mate / former Dawg Kevin Kisner will have a more difficult time saving their weekend chances on Friday. Sepp Straka will, too.

They’re at +6, +3, and +7, respectively. Harris English tees off later in the afternoon.

Still, Harman’s and Henley’s highlights are impressive and envy-inducing if you play golf.

Open the club face to spin it like Brian Harman did at the U.S. Open

At least that’s what all the YouTube tips tells me. I’m not an expert, and am guaranteed to blade this attempt if I try it during a round.

But Brian Harman knows how to spin it. In fact, if this ball catches just one fewer groove on his clubface, it goes in the hole for eagle.

It’s good, Brian. You can pick it up.

Russell Henley didn’t have a great round, but this is what he’s capable of

Russell Henley can absolutely put it all together at a major. It just won’t be at this year’ U.S. Open more than likely.

He has the shots in his bag. Truly one of the most technically sound golfers on the tour. He’s just pure when he’s at his apex.

Unfortunately, he also has blow-up rounds all too often. I can definitely relate, as I play exclusively blow-up rounds myself.

But it ain’t a profession for me. I still believe Henley can piece it together and win a major before it’s all said and done.

When you see him hit enough shots like this, you know it’s possible.
