The golf world is split this week, and no, it’s not because of the LIV Tour. Most of the world’s top players are gathered at the Renaissance Club for the Scottish Open a week ahead of the Open Championship at St. Andrews. Others are stateside for the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky. However, in Georgia, the talk of the golf world is Davis Thompson who earned PGA Tour status for the 2022-23 season this week.

Thompson completed his collegiate career at Georgia in 2021. During his time in Athens, Thompson was chosen as SEC Player of the Year (2020-21) and earned some sort of All-American status each of his final three seasons. As a freshman, he matched a school record with a 9-under 63. He won the NCAA Athens Regional as a sophomore for his first collegiate victory before winning the Jim Rivers Invitational individually to help the Bulldogs take home the team title during his junior season. In 2020-21, Thompson won two different tournaments including the NCAA Tallahassee Regional with a career-best 14-under 202 to help Georgia qualify for the NCAA Championships. He was a semifinalist for the Byron Nelson Award and a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award all while twice ascending to No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Outside of UGA, Thompson for the United States on the Arnold Palmer Cup Team twice, helped the US the retain the Walker Cup against Great Britain and Ireland and played in multiple PGA Tour events including the 2020 U.S. Open Championship. He turned pro in 2021 and is currently seventh on the Korn Ferry Tour’s points lists for the 2021-22 season. That included a REX Hospital Open win last month in Raleigh, N.C. and four top-10s in 16 starts. In doing so, he has crossed the fail-safe points threshold and is guaranteed a top 25 finish to earn a 2022-23 PGA Tour card with just four regular-season events remaining on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Thompson becomes the 16th Georgia player that played for head coach Chris Haack to make the PGA Tour. The group of Bubba Watson, Harris English, Chris Kirk, Kevin Kisner, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Hudson Swafford, Brendon Todd, Keith Mitchell, Sepp Straka, and Ryuji Imada have combined for 44 PGA Tour wins while former Bulldogs have won a total of 24 events on the Korn Ferry Tour.
