Georgia grabbed consecutive wins over ranked teams last week for the first time in 18 years. Those wins allowed Mike White and company to jump into the latest AP poll, debuting at No. 23. It marks the first time since January of 2012, 13 years ago, that the Bulldogs have been ranked.

It took wins over Kentucky and Oklahoma to get the Bulldogs into the top 25. They lost their SEC opener nine days ago against Ole Miss. The Wildcats were ranked No. 6 at the time and they’re now ranked No. 8. Oklahoma fell from No. 17 to outside of the top 25 after losses to UGA and Texas A&M in the same week.

It doesn’t get any easier for Georgia. The Bulldogs will take on No. 6-ranked Tennessee on Wednesday. That game is set for an 8 p.m. ET tip inside Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. A few days after that the Bulldogs will take on the new No. 1 team in the AP poll, Auburn. Tennessee was in the No. 1 spot last week but a blowout loss at Florida caused the Vols to slide. The Tigers move from No. 2 to No. 1 and they’ll come to Athens next weekend.

The AP top 25 ranking is a milestone for White. His predecessor, Tom Crean, never got the Bulldogs to the point of being ranked. Fifteen years is a long time to reach what is a reasonable and maybe even modest level of relevancy. But the road forward is so tough that White knows he and his team can’t spent much mental energy on it.

“If that were to happen [being ranked], I’d be happy for our fans,” White said after the win over Oklahoma. “I don’t really care. I want to reach our potential and reach our ceiling and continue to get better and prepare well for this next one. If it happens or it doesn’t happen, we’re still going to talk about how we handle today’s success.”
