Georgia is knocking on the door of the top five in the On3 Industry Team Rankings. The Bulldogs now rank No. 6, up two spots, after landing Houston County (Warner Robins, Ga.) safety Jordan Smith.

The Bulldogs were No. 17 this time last week. They added Jared Curtis on May 5, causing them to jump a whopping 10 spots in the rankings to No. 7. After falling to eighth between that day and today, Smith has put Georgia over the Crimson Tide and Texas A&M for the No. 6 spot.

USC and LSU rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Ohio State is at No. 3 with Notre Dame at No. 4, and Oregon comes in at No. 5. Georgia has a chance to move past a couple of those teams, or more, this coming week with the decision of five-star offensive lineman Jackson Cantwell.

At 6-foot-2 180 pounds, Smith is the nation’s No. 75 overall prospect and No. 6 safety per the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that includes all four websites that publish recruiting rankings. He’s the No. 7 player in Georgia.

“Development played a big role in my decision,” Smith told On3. “Being around a culture where winning and competing is everything meant a lot too. It’s also not too far from home.”

The past four NFL Drafts have seen Georgia get two safeties, Lewis Cine and Malaki Starks, selected in the first round. The Bulldogs have also had three other safeties picked in that time with one going in the second round (Javon Bullard) , one in the third round (Tykee Smith), and one in the fifth round (Chris Smith).

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was also an All-SEC safety in his day. That’s something that caught Smith’s eye during the recruiting process.

“Being that Kirby played defensive back at Georgia makes this even more meaningful,” Smith said. “I have a strong bond with Donte too. It’s something new I learn about the game every time we talk. I have really connected with the whole staff at Georgia.”
