Georgia jumps to No. 1 in Coaches Poll after Alabama loss
After Alabama fell at the hands of Tennessee on Saturday, Georgia makes the jump to the No. 1 team in the country according to the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs, who beat Vanderbilt 55-0 over the weekend, held the top spot in the AP Poll last week and are expected to stay there when the latest version gets released later today.
Ohio State and Michigan follow Georgia at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. Alabama with the loss is down to No. 6 with Tennessee at No. 4 and Clemson at No. 5. Ole Miss, TCU, Oregon and UCLA round out the top 10.
Speaking of Tennessee, Georgia takes on the Volunteers November 5th in Athens, a showdown that’s setting up to be just the third top-five matchup in Sanford Stadium history. The previous two came in 1942 and 1983 against rivals Georgia Tech and Auburn respectively.
As for the rest of the schedule, things aren’t any easier. While the Bulldogs are off this week, The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and the Florida Gators await on October 29th. Then it’s Tennessee at home followed by road trips to Starkville (November 12th) and Lexington (November 19th) to take No. No. 24 Mississippi State and No. 18 Kentucky. The Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs 27-17 last night in Lexington. They take on Tennessee as well over the next couple of weeks – October 29th.

“Happy for homecoming and our fan base. I appreciate them coming out. I know it was a little warmer than we anticipated. I certainly was proud of our players to start fast and we got to play a lot of guys,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said in his postgame press conference on Saturday after the win over Vanderbilt. “I thought the guys that came in during the second half really played to a standard. Anytime you get a shutout, any time you get that many yards, it’s a positive. And we got to play a lot of players. We’re a beat-up, banged-up football team going into the off week. It’s going to be important that we give these guys to get well.”
“Yeah, we definitely reset. I mean, there’s going to be an off period there towards the end of the week that everybody gets to go away, get away from the building for two days, 48, whatever, 60-something hours off,” Smart added, speaking on the sort of reset that takes place during the bye week. “That’s a big reset because it’s taxing, you know? We stretch the limit of what stamina you have. That’s mental focus stamina, that’s physical toughness stamina. We stretch that rubber band out, and we’re going to let that recoil a little bit then get back after it.”
