Georgia loses standout 2025 cornerback Shamari Earls to Michigan
Georgia received some rough news on the recruiting trail today, losing the sixth highest rated commitment of its Class of 2025 as four-star cornerback Shamari Earls has flipped his pledge to the Michigan Wolverines.
A one-time South Carolina commit, Earls had committed to the Bulldogs in early July and was emphatic in his decision at that point.
“When I committed to South Carolina, I feel like I committed a little too fast,” Earls told On3. “I didn’t lay out all my options and go through every single thing. After taking some visits and looking at the options, I have decided Georgia is the best place for me…To be the best, you have to play with the best. Georgia is the best. They have great players, great coaches, and it is an elite program.”
Earls’ commitment was seemingly quite solid until the last month, when the Wolverines, who’d long been involved, began to become a much larger factor.

“They’ve been fighting,” Earls told On3’s EJ Holland following a recent visit to Ann Arbor. “All of last week we were having meetings with them. I’ve been thinking about it. I told my parents I don’t have to go to Georgia to go to the NFL. I feel like maybe I do need to get thrown into the fire and compete for a starting spot next year. It’s nothing against Georgia. It’s a really good program. I still have a lot of respect for them. We’re working on it.”
With the loss of Earls, the Bulldogs are now down to three defensive back commits in the Class of 2025. Cornerback Jontae Gilbert, projected safety Todd Robinson, and safety Jaylan Morgan remain on the list as of today. Safety Rashad Johnson also flipped from the Bulldogs earlier this season, taking his talents to Texas A&M.
On3 Scouting Report on Shamari Earls
One of the most physically-gifted cornerback prospects in the 2025 cycle, who touts a high-end combination of size, athleticism and ball skills. Measured in at a shade under 6-foot-2, 205 pounds prior to his senior season. Has plus length, with arms that measure 32.75 inches. A two-way standout at the high school level, working as a wide receiver and cornerback. Uses his length and instincts to make plays in coverage. Does a nice job staying in-phase, especially on broken plays. Can use his strength and length to disrupt receivers within the route. Active and willing in run support. Came down with a few difficult interceptions as a junior. Flashes his athleticism as a receiver, showing the ability to take the top off of defenses and pull away in the open field. Finished his junior season with 25 tackles and 2 interceptions to go with 720 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. A top athlete in track and field, running a 10.80 second 100 meters as a junior. Also won a state title in indoor long jump with a 23-10.75 foot leap. Expected to transition to safety for his senior season, to mitigate teams avoiding targeting him as a corner. Will need to continue honing his technical skill in coverage as a corner and should make strides once he fully focuses on the position.
