Georgia pitcher Jonathan Cannon took home his second SEC Pitcher of the Week award this season after a dominant outing Friday night against Mississippi State. Cannon, who was perfect into the fifth and allowed just three hits in his 8.0 scoreless innings pitched as he struck out nine and walked none, helped Georgia to an 11-0 win in the opener of SEC play. That ultimately propelled them to a weekend series win over the defending national champions.

Cannon, who is 4-1 on the season, has pitched an SEC-leading 34.1 innings this season with a 1.83 ERA. He has 37 strikeouts to just one walk, which was intentional. His previous recognition for SEC Pitcher of the Week was shared with Texas A&M’s Micah Dallas after Cannon pitched 8.1 shutout innings against Akron, another game in which he only allowed three hits. That’s not to mention a career-high 11-strikeout performance that Cannon had against Lipscomb in the final series of non-conference play, recording that in 6.0 innings of work.

“He’s a strike thrower, that’s the biggest thing, and anytime you’re a strike thrower, there’s a chance you might get hit a little bit because you throw so many strikes,” Georgia coach Scott Stricklin said of Cannon last week prior to his start against Mississippi State. “That’s probably the one thing that’s Jonathan’s next step: to throw some balls on purpose. He just throws four pitches for strikes, he fills up the strike zone, but as a hitter, I know this ball’s going to be over the plate. So that’s when you’ve got to make hitters uncomfortable. He throws inside really well, and when you look at his numbers, he’s got some hit by pitches because he throws inside to right handers. He’s got a life, a lot of that arm-side run that goes into those right handers. So he’s hit some guys, and that’s what he’s trying to do by keeping those guys off the plate, throwing it inside. But he’s up to 97 miles an hour, he throws a ton of strikes, he’s 6-foot-5, he’s athletic, he fields his position. He checks all the boxes, does all the right things. He’s structured, he’s smart. I think he’s going to pitch for a long time. He’s really good.”
