Georgia hasn’t spent much time in Sanford Stadium in 2024, three games to be exact, but that changes as the No. 12 Bulldogs play host to No. 7 Tennessee. UGA needs this win to stay in the College Football Playoff race and the Volunteers could need it, too.

It’s the first night game Between The Hedges in over a year and based on players reactions to a post from Barstool Sports’ UGA instagram account, they’d like to see Sanford Stadium as dark and ominous as possible. Barstool posted a graphic saying “Blackout Sanford” with a twitter post in the middle. Since it went up, numerous Georgia players and others close to the program have reposted it to their instagram stories, indicating support for the movement.

Tate Ratledge, Lawson Luckie, Smael Mondon, Nate Frazier, Oscar Delp and numerous other Bulldogs have all gotten into the action. The Classic City Collective has also shown support.

Georgia has blacked out Sanford Stadium numerous times over the years, sometimes with the offense wearing black jerseys and sometimes not. The last time the Bulldogs donned the black jerseys was 2020 against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs won that game 31-24 in front of a limited number of fans.

The Bulldogs wore black jerseys in blackouts vs. Auburn in 2007, an emphatic win, and Alabama in 2008, an embarrassing loss. There have also been blackout movements for other games when the team would ultimately don red jerseys. Those movements have been executed to varying degrees by the Bulldog faithful but the buy-in is always greater when the Georgia is using its alternate tops.

What the fans do in this instance won’t impact what Kirby Smart decides to do with jersey choice. Seeing as how the Bulldogs are playing in a big game and Smart is almost always leery of manufactured juice, it’s unlikely that the Dawgs sport anything other than their home red tops.

Georgia enters the game with a 7-2 record. It has losses at No. 10 Alabama and at No. 11 Ole Miss but it also has wins over No. 3 Texas and No. 20 Clemson. Both victories were by two scores or more. It has a chance to add to that resume with a third top-20 win on Saturday.
