EA Sports College Football 25 arrived this week – in full on Friday at midnight after early access was given on Monday for deluxe edition buyers – and with it’s launch has come plenty of talk. A new generation of gamers have been introduced to the things those before them loved (and hated) about older versions of the game. The biggest difference of course has been actual players in the game, and for guys like Georgia safety Malaki Starks, that’s been a dream come true.

“When the last one came out I was little, and I remember playing it all day. Now I’m in it,” Starks said about the game. “I’m honored. It’s crazy because I remember playing the game and making myself and now I’m in there. I’m very blessed.”

Starks, on Tuesday at SEC Media Days in Dallas, had yet to get his hands on the game. His teammate and travel partner Mykel Williams tried bringing his console with the Bulldogs to the Lone Star State but couldn’t get connected to the hotel wifi to download and play. Rookie mistake if you ask me. Gotta download the game beforehand to play right at launch!

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart wouldn’t have known where to start if he had been handed a console and told to fire the game up. In an effort to relate to his players on the trip to Dallas, College Football 25 was a discussion, and Smart was surprised EA Sports was able to keep the thing in stores. Starks and Williams got a good laugh out of their 48-year-old coach’s comment though, informing him that the majority of folks play on a digital version instead of a hard copy in the year 2024.

“I was so embarrassed, but I was glad they got a kick out of that,” Smart said. “It made me realize how out of touch I actually am with how far things have come. You can just download it and go play. It’s that simple. So the stores don’t have to keep it … Not to pick on Coach Saban because I got a lot of kind words to say about him coming up, but I always thought that like, ‘Oh, man,’ I saw him as older when he was coaching and I saw myself as younger, and now I’m looking at it like, ‘Man, I’m old.'”

As for Carson Beck, Georgia’s third player the Bulldogs brought to Dallas, he too was excited to play but wasn’t going to get his feelings hurt one way or the other about ratings. Beck comes in as the No. 18 overall player and second-rated quarterback behind Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Many believed he should’ve been higher. Beck on the other hand understands it doesn’t matter much at all.

“No, I actually haven’t played the video game because, well, I’m sitting here right now,” Beck said with a smile on his face. “Yesterday, I think it came out at like 4 yesterday maybe. All our teammates are sending videos into our group chat and whatever and I’m sitting on a plane. I haven’t gotten to play it.”

“Obviously, it’s a video game. Rate me where you want, I’m just going to go do the real thing in real life,” he added. “I’m not really too worried about a video game.”

EA Sports College Football 25 is now available in full on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
