Georgia point guard Silas Demary named SEC Player of the Week

Georgia entered last week having lost four straight games and it’s NCAA Tournament hopes were clinging to life. Thanks in large part to a couple of herculean efforts from Silas Demary Jr. the Bulldogs are now back in the thick of the tourney hunt after grabbing wins over No. 5 Florida and at Texas. On Monday the SEC honored Demary by making him the league’s player of the week.
Demary eclipsed the 20-point mark in each game, averaging 23.5 points per game in the short stretch. He had 21 points in the upset win over Florida while pulling down three rebounds, dishing out three assists, and recording a pair of steals. Demary also knocked down four of six three-point attempts.
He followed that up with another tremendous showing, scoring 26 points against Texas on Saturday night as the Bulldogs controlled that game start to finish. Demary also had four rebounds and a pair of steals in the 83-67 win, one that moved the Bulldogs to 18-11 on the year.
While the past two games have featured a little extra from Demary, he has been playing at a high level for weeks. Demary has scored at least 16 points in six straight games with five of those coming against teams ranked inside the top 25. Three of those five teams are ranked inside the top 10 and the six game stretch has seen the sophomore guard average 20.5 points and four assists per game.

The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 33 in the NCAA NET rankings, a data point that the committee relies upon when selecting the NCAA tournament field. Both of Georgia’s wins last week were quad-one wins, giving them a total of four on the year. Next up is a trip to South Carolina on Tuesday and that game will tip off at 6 pm on The SEC Network. Georgia will close out its regular season on Saturday with a home matchup vs. Vanderbilt, which is also fighting to make the NCAA Tournament. That one tips off at 12 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Closing out the regular season with four straight wins, a feat that would allow them to reach 20, would all but guarantee the Bulldogs a spot in the tournament for the first time since 2015. Georgia needs to win at least one of two to have a strong chance at the big dance.
