Georgia pounds LSU 81-69 behind 17 points from Asa Newell, Blue Cain double-double

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia entered Stegemen Coliseium Wednesday night needing a win over LSU remain strong in the NCAA Tournament discussion and it got it. The Bulldogs beat the Tigers 81-62 to move to 16-7 on the year and 4-6 in SEC play.

Freshman forward Asa Newell led the way with a game-high 17 points but sophomore guard Blue Cain also shined. He recored a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while also racking up eight assists compared to zero turnovers.

Sophomore guard De’Shayne Montgomery and third-year forward RJ Godfrey also scored in double digits. Montgomery contributed 12 points and three steals while Godrey recorded a dozen points of his own to go with six boards and three helpers.

LSU was red hot to start, scoring its first 27 points via the three-point shot. It didn’t make its first two-point basket until over 18 minutes into the game. Georgia dominated the glass in the first period, taking a 25-9 rebound advantage into the half but the Bulldogs were unable to pull away.

The Tigers hot shooting kept pace with the Bulldogs, who led by as many as eight in the first period. The largest lead came with just under three minutes left in the half and the Bulldogs carried at 37-31 advantage into the break. At that point the Tigers had already set their single-game high for three-point makes this season.

After a hot start to the second half, the Tigers cooled off and Georgia pulled away. LSU pulled to within three points around five minutes into the second half but the Bulldogs went on a 14-2 run that put the game away. Cain, Montgomery, and Godfrey all made two field goals during that span with Cain picking up an and-one.

Georgia led by as many as 20 in the final minute and earned the 19-point victory to move to 4-6 in league play. Next up is another ranked opponent. This time it’s Mississippi State. The Maroon Bulldogs come to Athens on Saturday with tip scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on The SEC Network.
