Georgia is tweaking it’s coaching staff in the defensive backfield. The Bulldogs are promoting Andrew Thacker coach the STAR/nickel position at Georgia. He served as a defensive analyst for the Bulldogs in 2024. Matt Zenitz of CBSSports was the first to report.

As it currently stands, Thacker will still be an off-field coach. His title and responsibilities will likely change but his status as an analyst/off-field coach will remain, meaning he cannot leave campus to recruit. Analysts and off-field coaches can, however have an active, hands-on role during practice. That was allowed by the NCAA prior to the start of last season.

Georgia currently has two on-field coaches in the defensive backfield. Travaris Robinson is the team’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. He coached the Nickel/STAR position in 2024. Donte Williams serves as the cornerbacks coach. Both are headed into their second seasons with the program.

Thacker’s coaching career began in 2008 with a graduate assistantship at Central Florida. After two years there and three at Oklahoma State as a graduate assistant, Thacker was hired as the safeties coach at Southern Miss. He was there for one year, spent the next season with the Atlanta Falcons, and then went back to UCF in 2015 as the safeties coach.

The Cartersville, Ga. native went to Kennessaw State in 2016 and then spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons at Temple where he coached linebackers in year one and became the defensive coordinator in year two. When Jeff Collins took the head job at Georgia Tech, Thacker followed and held the defensive coordinator post on The Flats for five seasons before being let go by Brent Key in 2023. Georgia brought him onto its defensive staff last offseason.
