The latest US LBM/USA Today coaches poll is out and Georgia is up two to No. 6. The Bulldogs are now the nation’s highest-ranked two-loss team and they’re the second-ranked team in the SEC. UGA is coming off a 59-21 win over UMass after finishing up SEC play last week against Tennessee.

Oregon is No. 1 with Ohio State coming in at No. 2 and Texas at No. 3. Penn State and Notre Dame are ranked No. 4 and No. 5. Miami is behind Georgia at No. 7 followed by Tennessee at No. 8, SMU at No. 9, and Indiana, after it’s loss to Ohio State, at No. 10.

Georgia has wins over three of the top 12 teams in the Week 14 coaches poll. It started the season with a 34-3 win over Clemson, which ranks No. 12. It then went to Austin and took down Texas in November by a score of 30-15. Then, eight days ago, the Bulldogs downed Tennessee 31-17 to stay alive in the College Football Playoff race.

Now, a little more than a week later, the Bulldogs have secured a spot in the SEC Championship game. The winner of Saturday’s matchup between Texas and Texas A&M, re-igniting a rivalry that has been dead for 12 years, will play Georgia in Atlanta on December 7.

The Bulldogs have some business to take care of first. They will host Georgia Tech on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets look for their seventh win of the 2024 season. They got one vote in the latest coaches poll and Kirby Smart knows his team, especially his defense, will need to play much better than it did against UMass to get a win.

“I don’t know that it was just tackling,” Smart said after the game. “We did not tackle well, but it was more than just tackling. It was — like, I hate to say it, I just don’t think that our guys were ready to play and energized to play as their guys were. Their guys wanted it more than us, and it’s very rare that I could sit up here and say that. Like, they were playing harder, they were moving us, they were playing physical. They had some nice RPOs and some nice play designs, but it wasn’t about that. It’s, I want to — like, desire. That’s the biggest thing.”
