Georgia is exhausting quotes about getting up after taking a punch. The Bulldogs did it again and extended their win streak to 12 games with a 16-10 win over in-state rival Georgia State, but they had to find more ways to say ‘we’re resilient’.

Sophomore outfielder Tre Phelps had a good one after the Bulldogs’ 8-4 win over High Point on Tuesday night.

“Our motto is being able to take punches and throw punches,” sophomore Tre Phelps said after Tuesday’s game. “We got punched hard twice early and we’re able to stay resilient and know that we have the guys that are good enough to do it whether it happens in the first inning or the last inning.”

Georgia reversed their order on Wednesday night. They punched Georgia State first. The Bulldogs had a 5-0 lead going into the top of the third inning.

By the end of that inning they trailed 9-5.

Georgia has become good at what came next. They rallied, chipped away and their offense carried them back to the dugout with a win over the 10-3 Sun Belt program from Atlanta. Georgia State was a chippy and intense test but Georgia has continued to flex their toughness.

“We’re never out of the fight, we’ve come back too many times now,” Kolby Branch said. “We’re going to win the ball game no matter what.”

Georgia head coach Wes Johnson expected Wednesday to be a tough game at the end of a six-game in six days stretch.

“You knew today was going to be a grind,” Johnson told reporters. “I had already told our coaches that if we get out of here before eight o’clock I’d be fired up.”

Top performers

Georgia got home runs from Robbie Burnett (2-for-3, 3 RBI, two home runs, Tre Phelps (4-for-5, 4 RBI), Ryland Zaborowski (1-for-4, 3 RBI) and Kolby Branch (2-for-5, 2 RBI).

The Bulldogs’ offense put up 18 hits as a unit.

Davis Chastain was the Bulldogs pitcher of record. He picked up his second win over Georgia State this season. Chastain earned the win in Georgia’s 7-3 victory over the Panthers on Feb. 26.

The big picture for Georgia

The Bulldogs have a few days to gather their thoughts, relax and get into the spring break that has fallen over Athens.

The return to Foley Field on Friday night to host Columbia. The Bulldogs will also be in action Saturday and Sunday.

The Bulldogs welcome the rest. With Wednesday’s game, they had played six games in six days. Thursday will be a welcomed off day but one of a bit of maintenance for the Bulldogs.

“I’m feeling good, we’ll probably come up here tomorrow and get some swings,” Branch said. “I think everyone’s bodies are feeling good. We’ve got pretty good depth on this team. We can mix guys in and out.”
