Georgia sets date for annual G-Day spring game
Kickoff of Georgia’s 2023 season is still officially months away, September 2nd versus UT-Martin, but you can get a glimpse at the Bulldogs earlier. The annual G-Day spring game is set for Saturday April 15th at Sanford Stadium as announced on Monday.
The Bulldogs will go through 15 spring practices including three scrimmages. G-Day serves as the last of those and is open to the public as the team splits into two squads – the Red Team and the Black Team.
Georgia will be in pursuit of making more history in 2023, trying to become the first team in the modern era of College Football to three-peat. The Bulldogs joined Nebraska and Alabama as the only consensus back-to-back national champions in January with their 65-7 win over TCU. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart knows the challenge that’s ahead with a third championship as the goal.
“The biggest challenge is the same as in the world we live in today, the society we live in – entitlement,” Smart said after this year’s title game. “The minute you think you’re entitled to winning games and you don’t have to work hard – Coach Dykes and I were talking about it; the uphill battle for those guys is you think that you just inherit success. And I personally think next year is going to be a much more difficult challenge over this year because we had so many guys leaving last year. We got a lot of guys coming back. And unfortunately this one right here is not.”

Smart’s final sentence was of course speaking about quarterback Stetson Bennett, one of several Bulldogs to depart for the NFL Draft. He’s joined by the likes of Darnell Washington, Kenny McIntosh, Broderick Jones, Kearis Jackson and Warren McClendon on the offensive side. The defense didn’t go unscathed though. Jalen Carter, Christopher Smith, Kelee Ringo and Nolan Smith are a few of the notable names on that side of the ball that won’t be suiting up in red and black next season.
However, as Smart points out in his postgame quote, Georgia does return plenty of talent. Brock Bowers has been one of the best players in all of College Football the last two seasons. He’s back for a third. Ladd McConkey, Arian Smith and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint are also back as weapons for whoever ends up as the next quarterback. Meanwhile, on the offensive line, Sedrick Van Pran, a captain on the 2022 squad, returns at center to held hold things down. Defensively the names include a few of the leading tacklers at linebacker – Smael Mondon and Jamon-Dumas Johnson – as well as the likes of Kamari Lassiter, Javon Bullard and Malaki Starks in the secondary. Nazir Stackhouse and Mykel Williams are just two of the many notables back on the defensive line. All these guys and more will be in action for fans to see at G-Day.
