NEW ORLEANS — Georgia’s 2024 season is over after falling 23-10 to Notre Dame in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs are eliminated from the College Football Playoff and the loss makes it a clean sweep of teams with first-round byes to lose in the quarterfinal.

Gunner Stockton, in his first career start, completed 20 of 32 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown, as the Georgia offense sputtered all night, especially when it had a chance to score. The Bulldogs turned it over twice and were stopped on fourth down three times.

Georgia got on the board first, using its third possession to score the first three points of the game on a Peyton Woodring field goal from 41 yards out. The drive was boosted by a 67-yard hookup between Stockton and Arian Smith.

The lead didn’t last long as Mitch Jeter tied it up on Notre Dame’s next possession, connecting from 44 yards out. He would do so again with less than a minute left in the half, this time from 48 yards out to give Notre Dame a 6-3 lead.

With just 38 seconds left in the half, Georgia went for points and paid for it. Stockton was strip sacked on the first play from scrimmage and it was recovered by Notre Dame at the Bulldog 13-yard line. Riley Leonard found Bo Collins for a 13-yard touchdown on the very next play and the Irish took a 13-3 lead into the half.

They built on that lead with the opening kickoff as Jayden Harrison took it 98 yards for a touchdown, putting Georgia in a 20-3 hole. The Bulldogs picked up one first down with their next possession, but had to punt.

The defense did its job, getting the ball right back to Stockton and company at the UGA 38-yard line and the Bulldogs cut into the lead. Stockton hit Cash Jones for a 32-yard touchdown to cut Notre Dames lead to 10 points at 20-10.

That Bulldog defense stood tall once more in the third quarter, stopping Notre Dame on 4th and 1 at midfield. The offense picked up eight yards with the next four plays, giving it back to Notre Dame just inside Bulldog territory.

The Fighting Irish used the field position to put together another scoring drive, this time Jeter capped it off with a 47-yard field goal to make it 23-10 in favor of the Irish.

The Bulldogs mounted a response that did not show up on the scoreboard and it was its last gasp. They went 66 yards in 12 plays with Stockton throwing incomplete to Lawson Luckie on 4th and 5 from the nine-yard line. Notre Dame took over at the UGA nine-yard line, took over six minutes off the clock, and finished it off with a sack of Stockton with 55 seconds left in the game.

Georgia’s 2025 season ends with an SEC Championship and a final record of 11-3. It’s the Bulldogs first non-conference loss since falling to Texas in the 2018 Sugar Bowl.
