Georgia target decommits from NC State ahead of Early Signing Day
Georgia has been hard after N.C. State running back commit Kyron Jones, and on Monday, the Charlotte, N.C. native announced his plans to open up his recruitment. The Bulldogs actually hold an advantage when it comes to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, with 62.4% predicting the flip to Georgia.
“After much thought and prayer, I have decided to decommit from North Carolina State University,” Jones shared in a Tweeted statement. “I would like to thank the NC State coaching staff, current players, 2023 recruits, and Wolfpack nation for all the love they have shown. I wish the North Carolina State University school and football program the best.”
The twist to Jones’ Georgia recruitment however: Kirby Smart and company want him as a defensive back. A three-star ranked the No. 56 running back in the country and No. 39 at the position according to On3, the Bulldogs think he’d be better fit to play in the secondary under the direction of Fran Brown and Will Muschamp. Overall, Jones comes in at No. 733 according to the On3 Consensus.
Jones, who picked up the Georgia offer in November, recently took an official visit to Georgia on December 9th. He also had coaches from Georgia’s staff to visit this month. On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons described the Bulldogs as having “come on strong in recent weeks.” If he chooses Georgia, Jones would join a recruiting class that already features four defensive backs with A.J. Harris, Joenel Aguero, Chris Peal and Justyn Rhett committed.

Ethan McDowell of The Wolfpacker spoke with Jones in November and wrote the following about his senior season:
“The electric Charlotte Christian running back watched his recruitment blow up over the past six months in-part due to his speed on the track and the football field. He told The Wolfpacker that he will not enroll early as he hopes to complete his accomplished running career, with his eyes set on a 10.4 100-meter-dash.
Charlotte Christian’s season wrapped up last weekend with a state championship loss to Providence Day, and Jones played a critical role in helping his team get to that point. He ran for 1,346 yards and scored 19 total touchdowns during his senior season. The running back said he has improved the most with his breakaway speed, pass blocking and patience as a runner over the past year.”
Jones told McDowell that he did not plan to enroll early but did plan on signing in December.
The Early Signing Period begins on Wednesday with the majority of prospects expected to sign then. Georgia holds the No. 2 class in the country with 23 commits on board including nine ranked in the top-100 according to the On3 Consensus.
