Georgia unveils new jerseys, return of the block numbers for 2022
The Georgia Bulldogs are turning back the clock, at least when it comes to jersey font. Georgia Football had been hinting at the potential return of block lettering and numbering on its uniforms for a little while before the social media team made the big announcement just before noon on Thursday with former Bulldog star David Pollack helping in the process.
This isn’t the first time that Georgia has made an announcement as it relates to uniforms under Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs wore two separate alternate uniforms in 2020, a white version of their 1980 National Championship uniforms with red pants in the season-opener against Arkansas as well as a black jersey with a dog collar on the collar of the uniform against Mississippi State at home and in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl win over Cincinnati. Both featured the block numbers.
Georgia last wore the block numbers regularly before a rebrand in 2013. The move featured new logos including the secondary bulldog as well as text and number font changes to everything from jerseys and apparel to end zone paint. The new font featured a rounded system of typefaces which Nike attributed to as a reference to the University of Georgia’s rounded Arch on North Campus.
While it remains unclear whether the return to the retro look will be across all sports, it’s certainly the case with the football uniforms. Georgia Football gave a closer look at the details of the block font on each of its jerseys, including the fan favorite blacks, showcasing Georgia Football seniors Warren Ericson, Nolan Smith and Kearis Jackson donning the new look.

Georgia just wrapped up its set of 15 spring practices this past weekend with G-Day, the annual spring game, between the hedges. The Bulldogs will open the season on September 3rd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta against the Oregon Ducks. Former defensive coordinator Dan Lanning is now the head coach of Oregon after helping lead Georgia defenses, including this past season’s No. 1 ranked unit that helped pave the way for a National Championship, the past three seasons.
