ATHENS, Ga. — It’s SEC Championship week, and for the fourth straight season, the Georgia Bulldogs will be a part of it. Kirby Smart’s squad takes on Texas at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the Longhorns making a second straight conference championship game appearance, first in the SEC after joining the league this offseason.

Georgia and Texas played earlier this season, with UGA winning 30-15 in Austin. The Longhorns were ranked No. 1 in the country at the time before the Bulldogs wreaked havoc with seven sacks defensively and three rushing touchdowns for Trevor Etienne. Carson Beck threw a trio of interceptions – including one that brought about a chaotic scene from the stands with trash being thrown onto the field to allow the referees further time to discuss and eventually overturn a penalty call – but Georgia was able to overcome the miscues to hand Texas its only loss of the regular season.

That sets up a rematch for the eighth time in SEC Championship Game history. In the previous seven rematches, the regular season winner is 5-2. Under the direction of Kirby Smart, UGA has twice played a rematch, winning both times (2017 – SEC Championship vs. Auburn / 2021 – National Championship vs. Alabama).

Sunday Teleconference

*** Kirby Smart spoke to reporters from both side of this game Sunday evening via teleconference. The big story coming out of it was his comments on cornerback Julian Humphrey, who announced plans to enter the transfer portal earlier in the day. Smart wasn’t having much of the conversation surrounding Humphrey. Instead, his focus was on those that are with the team and all in on helping Georgia win.
