Georgia WR AD Mitchell available for Georgia Tech
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia sophomore wide receiver AD Mitchell is dressed out and going through warmups with the team for today’s game against Georgia Tech. The Missouri City, Texas native has seen action in just three games so far this season due to a high ankle injury
Mitchell suffered the injury in the second game of the season versus Samford, did not appear again for nearly a month before playing four snaps in Georgia’s win over Auburn. Overall, since the season-opener against Oregon, Mitchell has played just five snaps.
In Mitchell’s one full game of action this season, he hauled in four passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. That was in the season-opening blowout of Oregon. As a true freshman in 2021, AD Mitchell hauled in 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns including the go-ahead score in the National Championship Game against Alabama.
“He’s closer right now than he’s ever been,” Smart said in what seemed to be a half-joking manner. Smart also noted that he doesn’t consider Mitchell to be at 100 percent. When Smart spoke with reporters on Monday, he said that Mitchell hadn’t been doing “team” or 11-on-11 work in practice. Instead his focus had been on drill work and recovery. According to Smart, AD Mitchell feels as if he tweaked the ankle against the Auburn, the only game he has played since week two. Intel gathered by DawgsHQ last week suggested that Mitchell was on the mend. Smart’s comments on Monday seem to confirm that in regards to the improvement but it doesn’t appear, for now, to be at a rate that would have him back on the field against the Yellow Jackets.

“It’s been frustrating for him,” Smart said about Mitchell ahead of Georgia’s game against Kentucky last week. “He wants to get back. He works really hard at it. He was better last week than he’s been every week previous. He actually got to do individual drills last week and did some things. But he’s still not, or at least last week, I don’t know where he is this week because I haven’t seen him yet, but he was not where he could come out of breaks and do the things required to play receiver, and that’s tough. So he stayed here. He got extra rehab here, felt like he got a little better rehab here not having to be on it all weekend and during the game. So we’re, again, hopeful to get him back this week, but it will be day by day.”
