Georgia wide receiver Adonai Mitchell left the Bulldogs’ game on Saturday with what appeared to be a lower left leg injury on the first play of the game, announced in the press box as a left ankle injury. Mitchell caught the pass from quarterback Stetson Bennett and picked up 4 yards before being hit hard and taken down by Samford safety Emmanuel Flowers. He came off the field under his own power before being attended to by trainers in the injury tent and going to the locker room.

Coming into the 2022 season, Mitchell was expected to be on the Georgia’s top wide receivers. He caught the go-ahead touchdown in the National Championship Game win over Alabama, one of 29 catches including four touchdowns that Mitchell had as a true freshman last season. In Georgia’s season opener against Oregon, the Missouri City, Texas native brought in four balls for 65 yards and a score.

“I would say I’m more comfortable because last year, I was still trying to pick up the playbook as I’m going through fall camp. Now I basically have that down,” Mitchell said in an interview during preseason practice. “Once you get that down, the game slows down for you a little bit. You’re able to think about how you’re going to execute the plays versus getting lined up and being like, ‘Oh snap, do I have this route, do I block?’ Everything was going fast last year.”

“In the Clemson game, I was a young freshman. Now, I am going into my second year in the offense, and I am getting more comfortable,” he added. “I just recognize the signals now. I’m able to process quicker than I was last year.”

Kirby Smart has expressed concern over the lack of depth in Georgia’s wide receiver room several this already this season. The Bulldogs lost Arian Smith in the preseason for an extended period of time due to an ankle sprain that required surgery. Young wide receivers CJ Smith and De’Nylon Morrissette have battled injuries as well already in their young careers.

Smart had the following to say about Georgia’s wide receiver depth this spring:

“Yeah, I think we got better. Like we got younger players better. We still aren’t where we need to be. Like I really feel good, Ladd (McConkey) and AD (Mitchell), they’re SEC wide outs. They can compete at a high level. But when you go past that, you’ve got Marcus (Rosemy-Jacksaint) who’s done a tremendous job. Marcus is extremely smart and he can play all positions. We don’t have like, okay, this guy has got a hamstring, who’s going in. We don’t have that. We’ve got to grow that. We’ve got to get Arian (Smith) and (Kearis) Jackson, CJ (Smith), De’Nylon (Morrissette) up to speed and days like today get them closer. But they’re not there yet. We’re not there yet. We have to continue to grow. You look at Arian has an elite trait and we try to use that elite trait as much as possible, but we’re not where we need to be at wide out, and we’ve got some more guys coming, so we’re going to get some guys to help out.”
