Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested overnight in Athens for a pair of misdemeanor charges: battery and assault on an unborn child. Young was booked by Athens-Clarke County Police at 4:18 a.m. ET and remains incarcerated as of Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. with a bond amount of $2,500. No further details are available at the time of publication.

A transfer from Miami, Young has played in all five games for Georgia this season totaling 11 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He scored in each of his first two games for the Bulldogs, helping UGA past Clemson in the season-opener with the team’s first touchdown of the year. Prior to his career at Georgia, Young spent two seasons at Miami (Fla.) after playing one season at Lackawanna College in New York. He totaled 79 receptions for 930 yards and 10 touchdowns in 22 games for the Hurricanes, finishing third on the team in receptions (47) and receiving yards (563) as well as tied for second in receiving touchdowns (5) in 2023.

“Colbie is a really good player, and we need him to step up if we’re going to go where we need to go,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said of Young early in the season.

“He continues to grow and get better and we’re going to need him in our offense,” he added in September after Young’s second touchdown of the season. “We need him to be able to play even more snaps and be in the best shape of his life to play enough snaps.”

Young joins a list of Georgia players that includes Daniel Harris, Smael Mondon, Bo Hughley, Sacovie White and Trevor Etienne to be arrested. Their arrests have all fallen under the category of driving related. Wide receiver Rara Thomas was dismissed from the team before the season started after a second family violence situation. Georgia and defensive back David Daniel-Sisavanh also parted ways for repeated driving offenses during the offseason.

Previous Kirby Smart comment on Georgia culture…

“I always talk about process and outcomes. I talk about that in wins and losses, that we try not to base things on the outcomes in wins and losses. In this situation, the outcomes are very disappointing. Our process and the things we’ve put in place, I feel very strongly about. We do as much or more education than anybody in the country. We have discipline in the form of suspensions and we will continue to do so. We’ll have suspensions coming out of some of these. We had them last year with the Marcus Rosemy situation. We’ve also had to let guys go based on them … I don’t necessarily think it’s right to go down to the town square and publicly shame kids when that happens. They go through a lot, and there’s a lot of remorse from these young men who made mistakes. Our job is to educate and continue to grow these young men.” – Kirby Smart, SEC Media Days (7/16/24)
