The Reese’s Senior Bowl will take place on Saturday but practices have been going on all week. Often times scouts and NFL front-office personnel will take more from what is done on the practice field than what is done in the game. That would certainly be a good thing from Georgia safety Dan Jackson and running back Trevor Etienne.

Those two players were named tops at their position but the guys they competed against all week. Jackson was voted top safety by the receivers and tight ends. Etienne was voted top running back by the linebackers and safeties that had to compete against him all week.

While the two players are repping Georgia in Mobile, their careers couldn’t be more different. Etienne spent one season at Georgia after playing the first two at Florida. After being suspended for the first game of the season and missing three more with a rib injury, Etienne saw action in 10 games. He carried the football 122 times for 609 yards and nine touchdowns. Five of those scores came against Texas as Georgia took down the No. 2-ranked Longhorns in Austin and then again in the SEC Championship game.

Jackson was a wire-to-wire walk-on at Georgia. The Gainesville, Ga. native began his Georgia career in 2019 and redshirted while helping out the scout team. The same role awaited him in 2020 but he started making a little noise starting in the spring of 2021.

When the 2021 season started with a showdown vs. Clemson in Charlotte, Jackson served as Georgia’s sixth defensive back in passing situations. After Chris Smith went down with a knee injury, Jackson stepped in and started four games.

He came back and started the season opener in 2022 but was overtaken by Malaki Starks by week two. A foot injury derailed that season and caused Jackson to miss the final eight games. That same foot injury lingered and slowed him to start the 2023 season. He played in 11 games but Georgia’s primary safeties were Starks and Javon Bullard.

The 2024 season saw Jackson break out in a big way. He racked up 64 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Jackson also intercepted a pair of passes on the year, broke up three more, and forced a massive fumble that allowed Georgia to even the score with Georgia Tech back in November, a game the Bulldogs would eventually win in the eighth overtime.
