Glenn Schumann named to top 15 under 40 for 2023 College Football season
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports wrote about the top 15 coaches under the age of 40 entering the 2023 College Football season on Tuesday. Several head coaches were listed included Lincoln Riley, Dan Lanning and Marcus Freeman – plus of course a couple of coaches going into their first year on the job. However, head coaches weren’t the only ones on there. Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann was among the select few assistants that also made the list.
Schumann, going into his eighth year at Georgia, was recently promoted to the title of Fain & Billy Slaughter Defensive Coordinator after having the title of co-defensive coordinator last season. He shared that with Will Muschamp who still has the co-defensive coordinator title to his name. Along with the promotion in title, there came a raise. After interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles and being rumored among the top names for the defensive coordinator position at Alabama, his alma mater, Schumann’s pay got bumped from $805,000 last season to $1.9 million for 2023.
One of the few constants in Georgia’s budding dynasty is Schumann, who came to Georgia with coach Kirby Smart from Alabama in 2016. Since 2019, he has been co-defensive boss. In the last three seasons, Georgia has finished second, second and third nationally in total defense. On a staff that grows head coaches (Mel Tucker, Sam Pittman, Dan Lanning), Schumann might be the next one to land such a gig. Smart made sure Schumann didn’t leave this offseason, bumping him from $805,000 per year to $1.9 million after there was interest from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Schumann has been at Georgia since 2016, coming on with Kirby Smart’s first staff. Prior to that, Schumann spent eight seasons at Alabama including two as the Director of Player Development and Associate Director of Player Personnel. Despite not being an on-field coach, Schumann is said to have been a big part of the defensive game planning for the Crimson Tide alongside Smart and Nick Saban.
Schumann has had his fair share of success at Georgia too. He’s coached a pair of Butkus Award winners, Roquan Smith (2017) and Nakobe Dean (2021), while also dominating on the recruiting trail. Georgia just signed three of the nation’s top 10 linebackers in the country including Raylen Wilson, On3’s No. 1 linebacker.

“I think when we had an opportunity to hire him as coordinator, I knew he was going to do a great job,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said about Schumann after his hiring as the co-coordinator. “Schumann was here at that time as well, and he and Schumann were really neck and neck the whole time and both took on responsibilities then. Dan would be the first to tell you he never would’ve had the success here he had if not for Glenn Schumann. That’s what made the transition easier when Dan left. I felt comfortable Glenn would be able to take it over along with Will. It’s always great when you have two guys that know the system and two guys that can share that responsibility.”
Georgia just wrapped up spring practice this past Saturday and now moves into full on offseason mode, preparing for an attempt at a third straight title. The last, and only, team to do so was Minnesota in the 1930s (1934, 1935 and 1936).
