FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Jamon Dumas-Johnson entered the transfer portal earlier this month, and he’s got his home picked out too. However, his former Georgia inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann wished him well in his next endeavor.

“I love Pop. I mean, I wish him the best,” Schumann said on Wednesday in his pre-Orange Bowl press availability. “Obviously I care about him, and anytime you care about somebody and you have a time that you’re no longer with each other, then that’s what’s best for him in this case. He’s excited, and I’ll wish him the best from that standpoint.”

Dumas-Johnson spent three seasons in Athens, earning All-American status as a sophomore when he was a finalist for the Butkus Award. That season, his first as a starter, he finished second on the team in tackles with 70 total stops in 15 games.

In 2023, hopes were high for Dumas-Johnson. He was included on several Preseason All-American lists and was thought by many to be the favorite for the Butkus Award. A season-ending injury just nine games in though cut the year short for him and allowed Georgia to see what it had in a pair of freshmen, CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson.

Allen and Wilson are also part of the reason why Schumann has plenty of excitement for the future of the inside linebacker room.

“They’re really mature. They approach their preparation the right way,” Schumann said. “They didn’t start preparing differently when they got opportunities to play. They prepared that way really starting in spring ball when they got here. Going back to bowl prep last year when they were able to come in early.”

“I think that’s ultimately the mark of a young player that is able to help you,” he continued. “A lot of times it’s relative to their maturity level and how they prepare because nobody gets to Georgia without ability … They’re here for a reason. They’re really mature. They go about their business the right way. I know that when you have faith in how people prepare and do things, in addition to their ability, you know that they’re going to constantly improve. They’ve improved throughout the year. There’s nothing that beats experience. Sometimes they’ve learned from mistakes. Sometimes they’ve gained confidence through plays they’ve made. I’ve really seen really solid growth the last couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to watching them play.”

Allen and Wilson will be joined in the linebacker room next season by returning starter Smael Mondon. Dumas-Johnson’s fellow third-year has already made his decision known, passing on the NFL Draft for another year in Athens. Then there’s the likes of Jalon Walker, who spends time with both the inside and outside linebackers, Troy Bowles and a trio of talented true freshmen: Justin Williams, Chris Cole and Kris Jones.

Needless to say, Georgia’s linebacker room is going to be okay. Dumas-Johnson’s departure isn’t ideal, but the Bulldogs will be just fine with tons of talent and untapped potential still there for Schumann and company to work with.
