Halftime Notes: Georgia and Tennessee tied at 17
ATHENS, Ga. — It’s halftime in The Classic City with Georgia and Tennessee deadlocked at 17. The Bulldogs fell behind 10-0 but roared back to take a 14-10 lead. The Volunteers responded with a touchdown and UGA evened it up in the final seconds of the second quarter. DawgsHQ has some thoughts on what we’ve seen thus far and we’re ready to share it.
*** Poor start on both sides of the ball but the defense did enough to let the offense get back in it. Two really impressive drives from the offense in the second quarter but you wonder if the missed opportunity on the third drive will come back to haunt the bUlldogs. Georgia had a great chance to score a third touchdown in the first half.
*** Carson Beck has been hot and cold. We’ve seen some of the best throws he has made this season. We’ve seen him deliver a couple of poor ones, too. The ball to Dominic Lovett before the half wasn’t ideal, but it was catchable. He made it tougher than it needed to be. Beck looks confident and his legs have been big for Georgia right now.
*** Not much from the running backs thus far. Nate Frazier got loose for 11 in the second quarter and Beck had a 14-yard gain and that’s about it. Chauncey Bowens looked solid in short-yardage.
*** Way too many drops. Lovett’s dropped tunnel screen on the second possession prevented a big play. Arian Smith had one on the first play of the game although it was one handed because his arm was getting pinned. The tight ends have come up large in this game. Oscar Delp has really come alive.

*** The front five has looked really solid in pass protection. He’s not moving Tennessee much in the run game. The Vols have won that battle, but outside of Xavier Truss’ holding penalty on the final possession of the first half, mostly positives in pass pro.
*** Georgia controlled Tennessee’s run game for all but one drive and it got absolutely railroaded on that drive. The Volunteers creased the Bulldogs over and over on that drive. That’s something that Glenn Schumann will have to get cleaned up at the half.
*** The pressure is very inconsistent and it seems like Georgia is having to bring those extra bodies to get any pressure. That’s not the greatest recipe but it worked for a few possessions, allowing the offense to get going. Georgia has to win more one-on-one battles.
*** Secondary gave up some easy throws early on. It tightened things up in the second quarter but Georgia has to play the deep ball better because that is coming. Daniel Harris has given the secondary a boost.
