One moment, Jalen Carter was supposed to speak with the media at the NFL Combine. The next, he had a warrant for his arrest on misdemeanor charges of racing and reckless driving.

According to Athens Clarke-County police, those charges had a connection to the crash that killed teammate Devin Willock and Georgia staffer Chandler LeCroy in January.

In that moment, Georgia’s strange offseason after back-to-back National Championships got even more surreal.

Carter did not speak at the podium. He returned to Athens, turned himself in to police, and posted bond.

He also shared a prepared statement expressing the belief that the facts would exonerate him.

As of now, that’s all we know Jalen Carter’s situation

We didn’t speculate on The Georgia Show (YouTube / Apple / Spotify) Wednesday night. There was no hot-takery.

Everyone knows Georgia will have to fix something in its protocol. Kirby Smart will have to examine the flaws in his program.

UGA’s athletic administration will have to hold its employees to account in their own specific roles.

That’s the reality. It isn’t our job to solve it beyond that. And we probably won’t hear much more about it until the investigations run their course.

The only other thing that we do know right now:

This situation was already tragic. And now it’s just that much more heartbreaking for the families and individuals involved.

Our only official stance about it on the show Wednesday: We hope and pray that someone, somewhere will learn from it and make better choices on the road as a result.

Other Combine takeaways on the brain

It wasn’t all doom and gloom on The Georgia Show this week.

Nolan Smith deserves his flowers for the character he showed while at Georgia and at the NFL Combine. He is undeniably the best quote – for all the right reasons – that I can remember at Georgia.

There is a lot to look forward to when it comes to the on-field portions of Georgia’s NFL Combine attendees.

What will Stetson Bennett have to do to put his rocky offseason behind him?

Who will run the fastest 40-yard-dash time?

Can Kenny McIntosh shock the ‘experts’ who have him outside of the top ten in this year’s running back class?

Something good will come of the NFL Combine for at least one Georgia player. I feel confident about that.

It seems crazy to write this after back-to-back National Championships, but the Dawgs could really use a win right now.
