Jalen Carter earns Bednarik Award Player of the Week
Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter was named the Bednarik Award’s Player of the Week winner for Week 10 after his dominant performance in the Bulldogs’ 27-13 win over No. 1 Tennessee. Carter, a junior out of Apopka, Fla. and projected top-10 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had four tackles including two for loss and a sack with a pair of forced fumbles.
“I don’t know how many snaps he played. I didn’t check it. We count it. We do production. We know how many points he made. He certainly was productive in terms of tackles, calls, fumbles,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said when asked about Carter on Monday. “He was — the first time this year — I won’t even say he was 100 percent healthy. I would say the first time this year he was above 90/95. Because on the very first play of the game against Oregon, he took a tough ankle injury and has not really been 100 percent since. And he’s committed to getting back and he’s worked really hard. So I don’t know how many snaps he played. He didn’t play perfect. And he needs to get in better shape to be able to play more snaps. But he has taken ownership in working on that. That was the big thing for him coming into the season is, ‘How good of shape can you be in to play a larger volume of snaps?’ Well, we’ve had this great fortune of getting a lot of dudes ready around him because he hasn’t been here. So it’s like a luxury to have him back and have him playing well. He still has a few things he’s got to work on in terms of playing the right way within the plan. But he played really well the other day and we need him to continue that.”

According to Pro Football Focus, Carter played 48 snaps and was Georgia’s highest rated player with a defensive grade of 92.3. The 48 snaps was not only Carter’s highest snap count since coming back from an MCL sprain that sidelined him for two weeks but also his highest of any game this season. He had previously played 30 snaps against Oregon in the season-opener before battling an ankle injury against Samford, South Carolina (missing Kent State) and Missouri before suffering the setback with his knee against the Tigers.
On the year, Carter has 10 tackles including the two tackles for loss on Saturday. The sack of Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker – one which forced a fumble in the end zone and ultimately led to Georgia’s second touchdown of the day – was also his first of the season. He has 13 quarterback hurries, four of which came in his return from injury last week against Florida.
