Georgia linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson was booked at Athens-Clarke County jail on Tuesday for a pair of misdemeanor charges reckless driving and racing on highway/streets. The booking occurred at 6:35 p.m., and Dumas-Johnson was released less than an hour later at 7:15 p.m. on UJR (unsecured judicial release) per standing order #22 with a bond totaling $4,000 at arrest.

According to Georgia Code, UJR means any release on a person’s own recognizance that does not purport a dollar amount through secured means as provided for in Code Section 17-6-4 or 17-6-50 or property as approved by the sheriff in the county where the offense was committed.

Dumas-Johnson’s name appeared on the daily log for the University of Georgia police on Tuesday with comments that described the following:

“Warrants issued 02/21/23, charges resulted from the investigation into an officer’s observation of two vehicles travelling beside each other on College Station Road in a reckless manner at high speeds that fled the area upon sight of the officer.” The log lists the incident as occurring on January 10th at 8:00 p.m., less than 24 hours after Georgia won its second straight National Championship.

“We are aware of a report relating to a January 10 incident on College Station Road involving one of our student-athletes. The alleged conduct does not reflect our program’s values or the high standards we have established,” the University of Georgia Athletics Association said in a statement. “As this is an open matter involving a student, we are not able to provide any additional information at this time and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement.”

Dumas-Johnson was among the best linebackers in the country last season. He was named one of five finalists for the Butkus Award which goes to the nation’s top player at the position and an All-American by Sporting News. Making the accomplishments even more impressive, it was his first year in a starting role.

The Hyattsville, Md. native totaled 70 tackles on the season, second-best on the team, including nine for loss with four sacks. Dumas-Johnson also deflected three passes from his inside linebacker spot while forcing one fumble in 15 games. He did all of that in his first year having to replace the likes of Nakobe DeanQuay Walker and Channing Tindall – all three of whom were taken in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Dumas-Johnson was named the No. 4 returning linebacker in the country by Pro Football Focus recently. Max Chadwick wrote the following rundown:

“Dumas-Johnson is the next great Georgia linebacker, following past Bulldog greats such as Roquan Smith and Nakobe Dean,” Max Chadwick wrote in his rundown of the top-10 returnees for the position. “In fact, over the past two seasons, the only SEC linebacker with a higher grade than Dumas-Johnson is Dean. The sophomore led the SEC this season with a 79.9 run-defense grade.”
