Jamon Dumas-Johnson officially enters transfer portal
News broke Thursday night that Georgia linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson planned to enter the transfer portal. Well, on Friday, it became official as the Hyattsville, Md. native’s name appeared for colleges to start giving him calls.
Dumas-Johnson was one of Georgia’s primary starters at inside linebacker each of the past two seasons. He held one of the two starting spots for all 15 games of the 2022 season and started nine in 2023 before suffering a season-ending forearm injury.
As a freshman in 2021, the Hyattsville, Md. native saw the field in 14 games. His first collegiate drive actually ended with a pick-six on his only career interception. He returned the turnover 20 yards for the score to cap off a blowout victory over UAB on his way to 22 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, that season.
After the departure of three inside linebackers to the NFL following the 2021 season, it was Dumas-Johnson and his fellow sophomore Smael Mondon that were asked to step into larger roles. They did so well, finishing first and second on the team in tackles with 76 (Mondon) and 70 (Dumas-Johnson). Better known as “Pop” by his peers, Dumas-Johnson led the Bulldogs in tackles for loss with nine including four sacks. He also recovered a fumble in the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech.

Dumas-Johnson was a finalist for the Butkus Award in 2022 and considered one of the favorites to potentially win it in 2023, being named to numerous All-American teams in the preseason. Prior to his injury, Dumas-Johnson put together one of his best career performances with seven tackles – just one shy of a career-high – in three quarters of action against Missouri. He had multiple tackles for loss in wins over South Carolina (2.0) and Kentucky (1.5) to total 5.5 on the season, part of his 34 tackle campaign.
Earlier in the day on Friday, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Mondon would return for his senior season. That leaves Georgia’s linebacker room with Mondon expected to start alongside CJ Allen while the likes of Raylen Wilson, Jalon Walker and others – including the nation’s No. 1 linebacker for the Class of 2024 Justin Williams – rotate in.
