Jordan Davis 'overhyped'? Former New York Jets scout thinks so

Jordan Davis impressed everyone at the NFL Combine.

Well, everyone except for former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly.

Barring a trade, the New York football Jets have the fourth overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

Kelly took to the blogosphere to denounce any Jordan Davis / Jets hopefuls, though.

Jordan Davis just doesn’t impress him.

Should the Jets be considering this mountain of a man in the first round?

Absolutely not.

Davis is a classic textbook example of a prospect who got overhyped at the combine.

How the NFL Combine made Jordan Davis too ‘overhyped’ for the New York Jets

Kelly has experience with the New York Jets, and references his work experience with Bill Parcells.

While no one can deny Jordan Davis’s immaculate NFL Combine performance, Kelly thinks the New York Jets should pass on him in the first round because of his in-game limitations.

Davis is nothing more than a limited area and limited production role player. He will struggle to get to the quarterback in the NFL.

The name of the game on defense is being able to get to the passer and/or being able to defend throws downfield. In other words, if a team cannot select a legit pass rusher or an elite corner in the first round, they need to instead take a skill position offensive player and try to keep up.

I understand his concern.

Edge rushers are more appealing for a franchise that ranked in the bottom 10 for sacks in 2021.

The New York Jets’ offensive skill player draft strategy is always on point (sorry, we don’t have a sarcasm font), so they should definitely keep searching there.

Maybe Jordan Davis isn’t ‘overhyped.’ Maybe this scout is just looking at it wrong

If you want a pure pass rusher, then that’s great!

If the Jets want to attempt to score more points, then that’s never a bad idea!

But Jordan Davis’s NFL Combine results, in and of themselves, don’t mean he’s ‘overhyped.’

Just like the fact that he’s an up-the-middle defensive tackle doesn’t make him ‘overhyped.’

He just isn’t the positional player you think you need. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Jordan Davis is, however, incredibly gifted. Watching a 341-pound man move that fast and jump that high and far make him worthy of all the hype he gets.

Plus, if his work with pass rush specialist Chuck Smith sticks, then there is a ceiling for Davis to leverage that freakish athleticism that we all saw at the NFL Combine into a valuable NFL Draft pick and pass rusher.

I won’t be surprised if the New York Jets don’t draft him. Fourth overall is a little rich, even for their blood.

I also won’t be surprised if Jordan Davis makes them wish they had at some point down the road.
