Joseph Jonah-Ajonye sidelined for season after undergoing surgery
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia defensive lineman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye was announced as out for the season on Tuesday, undergoing a surgery on a lower body extremity. The freshman missed what would’ve been a homecoming trip for him for UGA’s game against Texas, and when asked why that was, head coach Kirby Smart announced he had undergone surgery.
A five-star out of Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas, Jonah-Ajonye had played in just four games this season meaning he’ll be able to preserve a year of eligibility. He recorded his lone tackle of the season against Kentucky – playing against Clemson, Tennessee Tech and Auburn as well.

Jonah-Ajonye was seen as a little bit of a developmental piece coming into college. He had plenty of tools – as evidenced by his five-star rating – however, it wasn’t until high school that he began playing football. Jonah-Ajonye was born in Nigeria and lived there until 2015.
“Joseph is going to be a special player,” junior defensive lineman Mykel Williams, a five-star like Jonah-Ajonye, said of the freshman early in the season. “I feel with time and work he’s going to be a real special player. He’s got great talent, great size, great strength. He’s going to help us.”
Jonah-Ajonye High School Scouting Report
Athletic, versatile defensive lineman with one of the higher developmental upsides at the position in the 2024 cycle. Measured at around 6-foot-3.5, 275 pounds prior to his senior season. Has a big frame and plus length with a 10.5-inch hand and arms that measure over 34 inches. An easy, natural athlete who moves like a much smaller player. Lines up at defensive end and inside on Friday nights. Flashes outstanding speed in pursuit, running down plays from the backside. Plays to the whistle and makes second effort plays. Shows quick hands at the point of attack. Is a mismatch due to his quickness and overall athleticism when he slides inside. Capable of overpowering offensive tackles as a edge setter against the run. Will need to continue honing his skill and growing as a player. Could stand to improve his pass rush. Born in Nigeria and did not start playing football until his freshman year of high school. Also extraordinarily young for the cycle, with a November birthday. Is the age of a 2025 prospect. Has notable upside based on his lower level of development and the room for growth relative to most other top 2024 prospects.
