Julian Humphrey chooses Texas A&M as transfer home
Georgia has had seven players enter the NCAA’s student-athlete transfer portal for football since the window opened on December 9. The first one to enter was redshirt sophomore cornerback Julian Humphrey and he has signed with Texas A&M per On3’s Pete Nakos.
Humphrey, who announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal before Georgia’s SEC Championship win over Texas, will have two years to play two. He started 10 games for the Bulldogs in 2024, tallying 10 total tackles and four pass breakups, but lost his job to Daniel Harris late in the season.
After being committed to Florida at one point during the 2022 cycle, Humphrey joined Georgia’s class late in the process and played in just three games as a freshman, taking a redshirt. His sophomore season saw him play in nine games and see significant action in a couple of SEC games. Then a collarbone injury against Ole Miss caused him to miss the rest of the season. Humphrey flirted with the transfer portal this time last year but never entered his name.
Georgia was able to keep him around for one more season. The move will allow Humphrey to get significantly closer to home as he is from Houston. When the Texas native spoke to reporters this spring about his decision to come back, being closer to his family was a big reason why he considered leaving.

“I would see teammates who are from Georgia and see them with their people,” Humphrey said in March. “It kind of got to me a little bit, so that’s why I went into the portal: because I wanted to be closer to my people. I talked to Kirby and Muschamp and Coach Donte, and they were saying this is a big year for me. This could be my year to come out and have a good year. I thought about it, and I wanted to be developed rather than just be down there for one year to say I’m close to my family. I stuck it out here because the development part is one of a kind compared to other schools.”
More on the transfer portal…
The NCAA student-athlete transfer portal launched in 2018. It marked a change from when student-athletes had to get a release from their school to transfer to another and they could be limited as to where they transferred. The portal allows student athletes to simply notify their current school and its compliance department that they intend to move on to another program.
Last season, Georgia lost 21 scholarship players to the portal, watching several end up at power conference programs around the country. The Bulldogs did add to their talent however, as they’ve done before. Adding to the likes of Lawrence Cager, Tre McKitty, Derion Kendrick, Tykee Smith, Dominic Lovett and others that have joined the program in the past, UGA brought in Trevor Etienne, Colbie Young, London Humphreys, Ben Yurosek, Xzavier McLeod and others that have had an impact on the Bulldogs’ 2024 campaign.
