Kevin Kisner gets it.

He gets the barks from Georgia fans at Augusta National.

He gets how special this past 12 months have been for his alma mater on the football field.

“A lot of ‘Go Dawgs’ today. It was good,” Kisner told reporters after his Monday practice round.

It’s the year of the Dawg.

Kevin Kisner contends with ‘a lot of golf course’ at the Masters

Kisner is from Aiken, S.C., right up the road from Augusta National.

That doesn’t mean the course gives him any friendly neighborhood deals.

This is Kevin Kisner’s seventh appearance at the Masters. He’s missed the cut each of the past two attempts (2020 & 2021).

Kisner recently got hot at the World Golf Championship match play in Austin, before finishing runner-up to trendy Masters favorite Scottie Scheffler.

“I didn’t play very good today, but that’s a long way from Thursday,” Kisner said after his practice round on Monday.

“Yeah, I’m just going to have to get really hot with the putter and chip and wedge the heck out of it. It’s a lot of golf course for me.”

The most challenging part?

Not the much-talked-about lengthening of 11 and 15, but the deceptiveness around and on the greens.

And a wild weather forecast that includes plenty of rain could make it even more challenging.

“I hope (the course) gets a little rain for those greens. They’re pretty spicy and firm, but it’s in immaculate shape,” Kisner said.

“I just hope we don’t get a ton of rain that can really ruin how much they’ve prepared the golf course to be awesome.”

Kisner is one of six Georgia golf alums with a chance to win the Green Jacket

Kisner once again has a shot to make his community proud at Augusta National.

Not only will people around Aiken and Augusta pull for the local guy, but Georgia fans have plenty of Dawgs in the proverbial fight this week.

“It’s cool, man. I don’t know how many are in it, but highly we obviously have 10 or 11 on TOUR that are highly successful,” Kisner said.

“You know, it’s close to home; we get to come here every year when we’re in Athens.”

Kevin Kisner is a pretty practical dude, and golfer.

But he can’t help but feel the energy in that ‘Year of the Dawg’ he mentioned.

“Hopefully it continues that way, and Sunday one of us is slipping on that jacket.”
