Kirby Smart explains Mykel Williams absence against UAB
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia was without its sack leader on Saturday night when it played UAB. Sophomore defensive end Mykel Williams was on the sidelines in street clothes as the Bulldogs took down the Blazers XXX. After the game, Kirby Smart shared the latest.
“He’s sick,” Smart said. “Hope to get him back next week. Hate it because he’s a really good player. Wasn’t able to play, but we expect him back next week.”
In three games this season Williams has two sacks. He recorded one in the season opener against UT-Martin before another one in the SEC opener against South Carolina last week. In total, Williams has three tackles.
As a freshman last season, Williams also finished first on the team in sacks with 4.5 on the season. He had one in each of Georgia’s College Football Playoff contests giving him four in the last five games he’s played.
In total, Williams, a former five-star player out of Hardaway High School in Columbus, Ga., had 28 tackles including 6.5 for loss in his debut season. He was named a Freshman All-American last season and was included on a number of watch lists and preseason teams this year.

Williams wasn’t the only Georgia player not dressed out on Saturday night. Others included running back Kendall Milton, safety Javon Bullard and wide receiver Ladd McConkey – among others.
“Ron (Courson) informed me that we have the longest injury list we’ve ever had since being here,” Smart said this week. “So continues to grow, and I think that’s a trend across college football. You very rarely hear me talk about our guys being injured or, you know, woe is me. I don’t think it’s something that you can control. We practice how we practice, and for a couple years we’ve been really fortunate to not have very many injuries, and I always hear about other teams, and this year it seems to be the theme across. I know Shane had a lot at South Carolina. There was a lot of them in the SEC opponents, but we certainly have more than we’ve ever had. So that becomes a hurdle. We gotta do a good job overcoming that, and we gotta be very resourceful as coaches in how we use the players we do have.”
