Georgia is just over a week into fall camp, and the Bulldogs are banged up. After nine practices, several of the presumed starters and contributors were on the sidelines for Saturday’s scrimmage instead of on the field. Afterwards, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart offered up an injury update that included Arian Smith, Tate Ratledge and Kendall Milton among others.

“Arian’s probably the toughest one,” Smart said. “The poor kid can’t catch a break. He’s had an injury right when he first got here, jumping in the long jump pit, then he had another injury his sophomore year. He’s just worked so hard to get back. He gave up track this year, and he’s an elite track runner. Elite. He gave that up so that he could have a successful season. He had a tough ankle sprain. It’s a high ankle sprain. Don’t know how long it’s going to take. It is going to require surgery, but it’s not broken. We’re hopeful to get him back. He’s overcome so much, and he’s such a great kid. Got a great family, such a positive kid, and he keeps getting tough breaks. I know that he’s going to persevere that, and I think he’s going to bounce back.”

When Smith has been on the field for Georgia, he’s been incredibly productive. Problem is, he’s only played in four games each of his two seasons on campus. In 2020, Smith caught two passes, one for a 31-yard touchdown at South Carolina and the other for a long 55-yard gain against Cincinnati. Then, in 2021, he added a 61-yard touchdown against UAB and a 35-yard touchdown against Missouri as two of his three receptions on the season. In total, that’s three touchdowns in five career receptions.

As for Ratledge, who’s coming off of a foot injury that ended his season last year, and Milton, who’s battled injuries throughout his career, they were held out for precautionary reasons, dealing with turf toe and a hamstring injury respectively. But there were others he mentioned too including Earnest Greene, Trezmen Marshall and De’Nylon Morrissette.

“Tate is dinged up. He’s got turf toe. It’s not anything to do with his lisfranc. We should get him back. Earnest, he’s got a hamstring that’s bothering him. It’s been bothering really for a couple of weeks now. He’s had it since summer workouts. It’s kind of been nagging him off and on, so we held him today. Kendall Milton’s got a little bit of a grade one hamstring, but it’s nothing severe.”

“He’s (Trezmen Marshall) got to continue to stay healthy. He’s been fighting a soft tissue calf strain, so he’s been in and out, but he made a couple of good plays today … We need to get De’Nylon back … He hyperextended his knee before we even started camp, so he’s got an injury that’s lagging over to camp. He’s back running, he should be back here shortly and hopefully we can get him back healthy and in there competing.”
