Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spoke to media members over the phone on Sunday evening ahead of SEC Championship week and his team’s matchup against LSU. As a part of the call, Smart updated the status of freshman outside linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. and junior defensive lineman Zion Logue after both left the field in Saturday’s win over Georgia Tech.

“Marvin’s got an ankle sprain. Not sure the severity. Zion is good. Zion was dealing with the same injury from the Kentucky game, but Zion should be fine.”

Logue’s injury designation from Smart is the first time that it’s been mentioned in any injury report. The Lebanon, Tenn. native has seen action in all 11 games to date, starting six, with 14 stops. Meanwhile, Jones Jr., a former five-star and top 20 player in the Class of 2022 according to the On3 Consensus, has taken on a bigger role since the loss in Nolan Smith for the season. He’s played in 10 games, recording his first career sack and fourth tackle this season on Saturday. Jones has also played the majority of the season in a shoulder brace as he has been banged up.

Should Jones note be able to go, it puts more pressure on Robert Beal and Chaz Chambliss. MJ Sherman is also in the outside linebacker room for Georgia, as is freshman Darris Smith while fellow freshman Jalon Walker has spent time working with both the inside and outside linebackers.

LSU Injury Update

LSU coach Brian Kelly also updated the health of his team saying that early indications on quarterback Jayden Daniels “look good.” Daniels left LSU’s game against Texas A&M on Saturday night several times and is dealing with an ankle injury. Kelly said he has been wearing a boot on Sunday but the first-year Tigers head coach did note however that it is not a high ankle sprain. Running back Josh Williams is also expected to be healthy for Saturday’s. Williams did not play against the Aggies.

On the season, Daniels has completed 238 of 347 attempts (68.6%) for 2,566 yards and 15 touchdowns while only throwing two interceptions. He’s also added a team-high 824 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

Kickoff time for Saturday’s game is set for 4:00 p.m. ET on CBS. It’s the fifth all-time meeting between Georgia and LSU in an SEC Championship Game setting, the second most-played matchup and Georgia’s most common opponent in Atlanta. The Tigers hold a 3-1 advantage including a 37-10 win in 2019 on their way to the College Football Playoffs, a National Championship victory and a perfect 15-0 season. Meanwhile, Georgia last won the SEC Championship in 2017 despite having been there three times since (2018, 2019, 2021). This will be the Bulldogs’ fifth trip in six seasons.
