Ladd McConkey named SEC Freshman of the Week
Accolades continue to follow the Bulldogs, and this week, it’s Ladd McConkey’s turn in the spotlight.
The redshirt freshman from Chatsworth, Georgia was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.
It was a well-deserved honor, as McConkey was a dynamic threat for the Bulldogs last Saturday.
He led the team with five receptions for 135 yards and posted a receiving touchdown.
That touchdown came on a 60-yard reception and seemed to be the play that put away the game.
On the season, McConkey has posted 16 catches for 280 yards and two touchdowns.
Additionally, his singular rush attempt on the season went for 24 yards and a score.
He’s also served as punt returner at times, taking three kicks back for 20 yards.
Background on Ladd McConkey
An unheralded prospect out of North Murray High School, McConkey saw his recruitment explode after early signing day two years ago.
“I saw the heart of a warrior,” Kirby Smart said of McConkey after the Auburn win. “He didn’t have one Power-5 offer. I said I want this guy on my team. Any player on our team will tell you Ladd McConkey will outwork any guy out there. He is everything right about college football.”
Smart also sang McConkey’s praises after a solid outing in the Georgia spring game.
“First of all, he’s got great toughness, he’s savvy, he has no fear. (McConkey)’s taken some shots this spring, but he gets back up after them. He’s in a competition for return game reps, and my expectation is that he competes,” Smart said after Georgia’s spring game. Ladd’s going to go out and compete for special teams jobs all over the place and compete at wide receiver to learn the offense — get a little bigger and stronger. He’s got really good quickness. But I’m excited about Ladd. He’s going to be a guy who is going to be a really good football player for us.”

For McConkey, the road hasn’t been easy.
He spent last season on the scout team, something he believes set him up for success.
“I think really physically going against those other guys every day,” he said of playing on the scout team earlier this season. “I mean just the way they approach the game-their physicality and everything like that. It showed me with the defense and even on offense how I need to approach things and go about it.”
He is Georgia’s third freshman to win the award this season, joining Brock Bowers and AD Mitchell.
