ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia safety Javon Bullard‘s status is up in the air for Saturday’s SEC opener against South Carolina. He suffered a sprained ankle in the first quarter of the Bulldogs’ win over Ball State. After the game, Kirby Smart said he was not certain of the severity of the injury.

Bullard was seen working through some back pedaling before going to the locker room. He emerged after halftime in street clothes with a boot on his left foot.

On Monday, Smart provided further update on his availability for when Georgia takes on the Gamecocks.

“Have not seen Javon yet because of Sunday being off. He won’t practice today. As far as where he is, probably won’t know until Wednesday’s practice. We’ve had guys in similar situations able to play, but won’t know until later in the week.”

Should Bullard not be available, junior David Daniel-Sisavanh likely gets the start on the back end next to Malaki Starks. Daniel-Sisavanh had two tackles and a pass breakup on Saturday. Dan Jackson is also in line to get more playing time too.

“That’s the whole point of next man up,” Starks said about the possibility of playing without Bullard. “You never get too comfortable. You learn to be ready when your number is called. David has done an amazing job with that. He’s an amazing safety so just being able to play next to him gives me confidence.”

“The coaches do a tremendous job cross training people to play multiple positions in the secondary if we need it,” Tykee Smith added. “Excited about the way Dan Jackson, David stepped in.”
