Georgia has officially added its first commitment from the Winter 2023 Transfer Portal window. Former Vanderbilt wideout London Humphreys pledged to the Bulldogs on Monday, confirming a DawgsHQ report from Saturday. The 6-foot-2 190-pound rising sophomore will have four years to play three at UGA.

Humphreys had a strong true freshman season for the Commodores. He caught 22 passes for 439 yards and four touchdowns on the season, ranking second on the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Georgia was on the wrong end of one of his biggest catches of the year as he put the Commodores up 7-0 against the Bulldogs back in October with a 49-yard catch and run for a score. The Nashville native also led the team in yards per reception among pass catchers who brought in more than three passes on the year.

A three-star recruit out of Christ Presbyterian Academy (Nashville, Tenn.), the same school as 2024 Georgia cornerback commitment Ondre Evans, Humphreys recorded over 1,000 receiving yards during both his junior and senior seasons. He also was a standout on the track where he owns a regional-record 21.73 in the 200-meter dash previously held by Jalen Ramsey. Humphrey’s father, Clark, was an All-American pole vaulter at Auburn while mother, Erin, was an All-American decathlete at South Carolina.

CPA defensive coordinator Ryan Taylor had a front-row seat to Humphreys’ development in high school. Doubling as both an on-field coach and a strength coach, he got to know the speedy wideout as a competitor and a worker.

“Naturally, he’s the best athlete we’ve ever had. He’d come in and say, ‘Okay, what do I need to do to beat whatever?’, and then, he’d do it no matter what it was. He’s a quiet guy, unassuming, but he can do everything. He’s just that kid that, no matter what it was you were doing or playing, he could win,” Taylor said.

More on the transfer portal…

The NCAA student-athlete transfer portal launched in 2018. It marked a change from when student-athletes had to get a release from their school to transfer to another and they could be limited as to where they transferred. The portal allows student athletes to simply notify their current school and its compliance department that they intend to move on to another program.

Since its implementation, Georgia has added several notable prospects. That list includes Lawrence Cager (Miami), Eli Wolf (Tennessee), Tre’ McKitty (Florida State), Derion Kendrick (Clemson), Tykee Smith (West Virginia), Rara Thomas (Mississippi State) and Dominic Lovett (Missouri), among others. The Bulldogs have had years when they’ve been active in the portal, attempting to take as many as four prospects before the 2021 season. They have also had seasons like 2022 when they didn’t take a single player and went on to go 15-0 and win the National Championship for a second straight season.

Portal needs for Georgia in the current class include defensive line and wide receiver, where it is expected to land multiple players at each position. The Bulldogs could also be in the market at running back, outside linebacker, offensive tackle, or safety. If a player wants to transfer from SEC school to SEC school, he must do so by January 2 when the current window closes. There is another window that will open in the spring but, at that point, a player must transfer in from outside the conference.
