LOOK: Georgia coach visits four-star TE, recent Stanford decommit
Georgia coaches are on the road this week recruiting for the Class of 2023, and tight ends coach Todd Hartley headed west to see four-star tight end Walker Lyons from Folsom, Calif. Ranked the No. 6 tight end in the country according to the On3 Consensus, Lyons backed off of his Stanford commitment just last week. The decision to do so comes after head coach David Shaw stepped down from his position. Lyons took an official visit to Georgia during the month of November and was in Athens to see the Bulldogs beat Tennessee in front of a packed Sanford Stadium.
“The reason Georgia is on my radar is because of the genuine interest between me and them,” Lyons told On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons. “We both want to win national championships and they are using the tight end position very well … Coach Hartley is one of the best tight end coaches in the country and it’s pretty clear to see that.”
“What was crazy about Georgia was how much everyone cared about football and how much I actually loved the city and the university,” he added.
Georgia has two commits already at the tight end position in the Class of 2023 – Pearce Spurlin and Lawson Luckie – but the Bulldogs are expected to lose Darnell Washington to the NFL Draft. There’s also the possibility that one were to leave for the transfer portal too.

Less than a month away from the Early Signing Period, Lyons is expected to take his decision into February. One wrinkle with him however is a LDS mission that Lyons is expected to take for two years at some point during his college career.
One of the more polished pass catchers at the tight end position in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Lines up with his hand in the dirt as a true in-line Y, splits out wide and lines up in the slot as a flex option. Excellent body control and ability to contort his frame to be in the best position to catch the football. Measured in at 6-foot-5, just under 230 pounds. Had 44 receptions for 746 yards and 9 touchdowns as a junior. Helped lead NorCal powerhouse Folsom High to a state championship final as a junior. Twitchy off the line of scrimmage and has tremendous wiggle for his size as a route runner. Shows some explosiveness as a hooper on the hardwood. Needs to be more violent in the run game as a blocker but does have willingness. May not have the length or pure catch radius of some other top tight end prospects. Expected to take a two-year LDS mission.
