Georgia wide receiver Mekhi Mews had an impressive outing in the G-Day spring game last Saturday. With four receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown, plus a couple of kickoff and punt returns that were among the day’s highlights, Mews opened some eyes as to what the walk-on is capable of.

“Mews does that every day,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said about the Central Gwinnett (Grayson, Ga.) product. “Mews is a guy that, he last year kept getting really close to being able to play and help us. He was on scout team so I had seen him make plays on scout team. We put him in a couple of guys as the returner. Very sure handed, makes good decisions, you saw today he’s got some return ability. Exciting, and you get what you get from Mews every day. The guy is a worker, and I thought he made some plays today with his feet and made some really tough catches.”

Mews, who played in four games last season and caught a pair of passes while also having a 21-yard punt return, sat down with former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray to discuss his big day during the spring game.

“My whole process the night before, I wanted to get well rested. I knew this was an important game for me, because I felt like I didn’t really have a chance to prove myself, had many opportunities in a game, so I took this game very seriously,” Mews said. “I just did my normal routines, warmed up before the game and once the game started, it just felt natural.”

Murray, the SEC career passing yards and passing touchdown leader as a four-year starter for the Bulldogs under the direction of Georgia’s current offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, said he sees Mews as a do-it-all kind of guy. Mews didn’t necessarily disagree.

“I feel like now that I’ve been in the offense for, this will be my third season coming up, I feel like I’m well diverse,” Mews said. “I understand why things are happening now. Instead of just knowing my route on certain plays, I’m knowing other people’s routes, I’m knowing what the running back is doing in protection and stuff like that, IDs at receiver and why we need to block certain people based off of the o-linemen. I feel like I’m comfortable now, and I feel like I could change positions to be able to help the team wherever.”

Mews has earned the nickname of “Waffle House” from Bobo because he’s always open. It was a name that came his way on the scout team last season. Whether he’ll get more opportunities or not, Mews certainly is ready, and he’ll always have the spring game performance to fall back on.

“I would love that,” Mews said about the dream of getting a scholarship at Georgia. “I feel like as a walk-on, that’s the ultimate goal. That’s still my goal. I’m still grinding it out. I mean, I’m going to grind it out whether that’s the case or not, but that’s ultimately the goal.”
