Georgia has been hit hard by the off-season surgery bug, particularly with shoulders. DawgsHQ has learned that junior offensive tackle Monroe Freeling has undergone shoulder surgery and is expected to be miss or be limited during spring drills. He is also expected to be back at full strength in plenty of time for preseason camp.

The South Carolina native played saw action in all 14 of Georgia’s games in 2024, starting the final five contests at left tackle. According to Pro Football Focus, Freeling saw 609 snaps in his second season at Georgia. That comes on the heels of 167 snaps in 2023. He is Georgia’s projected starting left tackle for the 2025 season.

The guy he replaced after nine games in 2024, Earnest Greene, battled an upper-body injury of his own. Greene was battling “stingers,” which is a nerve injury that can cause numbness, tingling, and a loss of strength in either or both arms. Freeling maintained control of the starting job once Greene returned from injury but the California native is back for 2025 as well.

Freeling struggled quite a bit in Georgia’s 2024 season finale, giving up multiple sacks in the Suger Bowl loss to Notre Dame. Prior to that, however, Freeling’s insertion into the starting lineup after the loss to Ole Miss coincided with the Bulldogs finding some footing offensively. The offensive line was far from dominant from that point on but the it was able to click in a big win over then-No. 7-ranked Tennessee and reel off three straight victories to end the regular season. Georgia then took down Texas, for the second time, in the SEC Championship.

On3 Scouting on Monroe Freeling

Freeling is one of the highest-rated Georgia offensive line signees in recent years. When he inked with Georgia in the 2023 class, the 6-foot-7 310-pound tackle was ranked as the nation’s No. 32 overall prospect and No. 5 offensive tackle per the On3 Industry Rating, a weighted average of the four websites that publish recruiting rankings. He was the top player in South Carolina.

“Physically-gifted offensive tackle prospect who pairs an elite frame with high-end athleticism. Has the best combination of frame, flexibility and functional movement skills among the strong offensive line group in the 2023 cycle. Grew to around 6-foot-7, 295 pounds prior to his senior season. Freeling has plus length to go with the stature, checking in with a 7-foot wing-span and arms that measure over 34 inches. A fluid, flexible mover on the field. Moves as well as any top offensive lineman in the cycle.”

“Tests very well in the combine setting and is a dunker on the hardwood. Flashes his high-end reactive quickness as a run and pass blocker. Has some dominant moments when working to the second level. Added strength as a senior showing increased finishing ability. Freeling also doubled as a disruptive defensive tackle, with the ability to take over games on that side of the ball. Will need to refine his pass set at the college level. Looked like the top offensive line prospect in the cycle after a strong week at the All-American Bowl.”
