It didn’t come with ton of fanfare but Georgia signed an elite safety prospect on Wednesday. Joenel Aguero (St. John’s Prep; Danvers, Mass.) put pen to paper at what seemed like a really long commitment to the Bulldogs.
In reality, he had only been on the commitment list since July but Georgia was in a good spot for a long time. It gave fans plenty of time to get familiar with the elite safety prospect’s junior film. Well now his senior film is out there and it’s even more impressive.
Georgia listed Aguero at 5-foot-11 205 pounds on National Signing Day. He’s the nation’s No. 43 overall prospect and No. 4 safety according to the industry-generated, equally weighted On3 Consensus. He’s the No. 1 player in The Old Colony State.
“Head-hunting, twitched-up safety who is the biggest hitter in the 2023 cycle. Delivers crushing blows over the middle of the field. Explodes into ball carriers and receivers. A top athlete who tests very well in the combine setting. Ran a 4.48 electronically-timed 40-yard dash prior to his junior season. Was considered the top athlete on the loaded IMG Academy defense as a junior. At his best when he can use his athleticism and physicality to play fast and move forward as a cover down defender. More of a strong safety type at this stage. Not overly long and may not have much more room for growth on his 5-foot-11 frame. Will need to continue developing his man coverage skills.” — On3 Scouting
Aguero was named Massachusetts’ MaxPreps Player of the Year earlier this month after a senior season that saw him help guide St. John’s Prep (Danvers) to a state championship. Aguero, who is listed as a safety according to On3, played on both sides of the ball, tallying nearly 600 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on offense. One of those touchdowns came in the title game against Springfield Central, the highest-scoring offense in Massachusetts. Aguero helped hold that unit to zero points that day.

Aguero will enroll at Georgia next month and will go through spring drills with the team. He has a chance to see the field right away, much like starting free safety Malaki Starks did this season. The Jefferson High School product enrolled early and was playing major snaps in the first game of the season. Starks has started 12 of 13 games this season with a pair of interceptions.
With Christopher Smith on the way out, Aguero could step into the strong safety role in his first season. It’s unlikely that he’ll be able to take the job over this spring but he could get himself in the mix by the end of preseason camp in August of 2023.
