Next Gen Stats: Georgia football players historically great at NFL Combine
Just when I think there aren’t any more ways to describe how good Georgia players were at the NFL Combine, some new piece of information pulls me back in.
It’s like The Godfather: Part III. Only I spend more than a few minutes allowing my eyes to engage with the subject matter.
Today’s offer I can’t refuse comes from the NFL’s Next Gen Stats.
I don’t entirely understand what their numbers mean.
But their claim is simultaneously absurd and astounding.
According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Georgia football players had the best NFL Combine since they started measuring
And by ‘started measuring,’ I mean ‘started measuring Next Gen Stats / started the NFL Network Era in 2003.’
The outlet claims Georgia had the most players ever hit an ‘athleticism score’ of 85 or higher in a single NFL Combine, with five.
Not surprisingly, Jordan Davis tops this list of Athleticism Scores.
He also ran the fastest 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine for a participant over 310 pounds in the event’s history (he weighed in at 341 and ran a 4.78).
Davis didn’t win out his position group in the 40-yard dash, though.
Fellow Georgia Bulldogs defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt ran a 4.77.
I bet you won’t tell Jordan Davis he ‘could have done better’ to his face.
Enough with the numbers – here’s the coach perspective on Georgia’s upcoming NFL Draft
As we wind down our collective awe over how good Georgia football players looked at the NFL Combine, it’s important to keep these events in perspective.
Yes, it’s great to see your school and its athletes prove their athletic abilities against the nation’s best.

Hopefully, these performances help every one of these Georgia players when it’s time for the NFL Draft.
I really enjoyed what co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann shared in his evaluation, though:
The numbers are the numbers.
They don’t lie.
But they don’t give out a trophy at the NFL Combine.
Georgia’s players earned a real one, together, on that same field in Indianapolis.
We’ll talk about the numbers for a while. And we should, because they’re historically impressive after a historically important season.
I’m with coach Schumann, though, for the long haul.
As impressive as those number are, the fact that so many individual talents embraced the concept of a team is what won Georgia’s football players a National Championship.
And that bodes well for Georgia in the foreseeable future.
