No. 1 Georgia wins ugly on the road 26-22 over Missouri
The Georgia Bulldogs absolutely didn’t expect Saturday night’s contest at Missouri to go that way, winning 26-22 over the Tigers using a second-half surge to do so. Kirby Smart’s team went into the locker room trailing by two scores and into the fourth quarter down a touchdown before outscoring the Tigers 14-3 in the fourth quarter to win. It’s Georgia’s second win under Smart coming back from a double-digit deficit with the other being the 2018 Rose Bowl win over Oklahoma.
After trading three-and-outs on the first two possessions, the mistakes started early for the Bulldogs. Kendall Milton broke off a 35-yard run but lost the football in the process. Missouri recovered, but wasn’t able to capitalize for points. Then, after another three-and-out from the Georgia offense, the Tigers cashed in with a field goal.
The 41-yard field goal from Harris Mevis started a streak of four straight possessions that ended in Missouri points. Brady Cook found Tyler Stephens for a 10-yard touchdown, followed up by another Mevis field goal to make it 13-0 Missouri. During that stretch, Stetson Bennett fumbled too to give the Tigers strong starting field position.
Jack Podlesny got Georgia on the board with a field goal of his own, but Mevis responded once again. This time Mevis’ kick came after the Bulldogs gave up a 63-yard run but held strong to keep the Tigers out of the end zone. That allowed Georgia one more possession of its own, finally getting into the red zone. Bennett kept the drive alive on a fake field goal run as the holder to move the chains, but the Bulldogs trip to the ended in just three points, sending the Bulldogs into the locker room down 16-6.
Things were slightly better in the third quarter, but Georgia still wasn’t able to take the momentum. A 16-play, 66-yard drive took 7:47 off the clock but ended in only 3 points. Missouri responded with a fourth field goal from Mevis before Georgia went 64 yards on its next drive. Darnell Washington caught a pass and ran for 30 yards, but a penalty pushed Georgia back and the Bulldogs settled for a field goal.
