Offense stays hot, defense struggles as Georgia beats UMass 59-21
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia appeared to have a mental letdown, at least on defense, in its 59-21 win over UMass on Saturday. The Bulldogs controlled the game, leading by two or more scores for three quarters but allowed 21 points to a team that lost its eighth game of the season last week.
Carson Beck connected on 20 of 31 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns and Arian Smith hauled in three of those passes for 110 yards and a score. Nate Frazier had a career day, carrying the ball 21 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns.
Georgia’s defensive struggles started right away as UMass converted a pair of key third downs and opened the game with a one-yard touchdown run from CJ Hester. The PAT staked the Minutemen to a 7-0 lead.
Georgia would go on to score 21 straight after that with Beck delivering touchdown tosses each time. The first was a 17-yard hookup with Oscar Delp to help Georgia tie the game. He then found Cash Jones for an eight-yard touchdown on 4th and goal for the second score, leading to a 14-7 Bulldog lead. The third was a 15-yard hookup with Dominic Lovett to push the lead to 21-7.
After stalling long enough for Georgia to gain a two-score lead, UMass cut the lead to seven with a 14-play touchdown drive ending with a three-yard touchdown from Jalen John.
A response came quickly from Georgia as it raced down the field in its two-minute offense. It needed eight plays to travel 75 yards and Beck found Smith for a 34-yard touchdown. Peyton Woodring‘s PAT extended the lead to 28-14 going into the half.
The Bulldogs tacked on three points with their opening possession of the second half as Woodring hit a 53-yard field goal into the wind. UMass, however, bounced right back with a 75-yard touchdown on the second play of the ensuing possession. Two possessions into the third quarter, Georgia held just 10-point lead at 31-21.
The next two Georgia possessions ended with touchdowns as the defense forced a three-and-out. Frazier finished off both of those drives, scoring from nine yards out to give UGA a 38-21 lead and then again from 15 yards out to make it 45-21.

The Bulldogs turned to the offensive reserves in the fourth quarter and Gunner Stockton led them on a 65-yard touchdown march that ended with Frazier’s third touchdown run, this one from two yards out. Georgia eclipsed the 50 point mark for the first time all season and added another to make 52-21. The reserve defense added another when Gabe Harris strip sacked AJ Hairston, allowing Chris Cole to scoop it up and race 28 yards for the score. That put Georgia in front 59-21 and it would finish the scoring.
Next up for Georgia is Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. The Bulldogs will host Georgia Tech in six days, November 29, at 7:30 p.m. ET. ABC will broadcast the game.
