On300 No. 1 player Marvin Jones Jr. commits to UGA
Georgia is set to sign its fifth On3 Consensus five-star of the day after the commitment of 2022 EDGE Marvin Jones Jr., the No. 1 player in the On3 rankings, out of American Heritage High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
In choosing the Bulldogs over Alabama and Florida State as his other top choices, Jones is ignoring his family ties down in Tallahassee. Father Marvin Jones Sr. was a star linebacker for the Seminoles in the 1990s.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the family is other athletic success with mother Alex Jones having run track at Miami, his brother Daryl is a cornerback at West Virginia and even uncle Fred Jones played football at Florida State. Needless to say, the DNA in Jones’ family is strong.
Georgia got the last say for Jones over the weekend with him being in town for an official visit. However, he also was in town in October when the Bulldogs took down No. 11 Kentucky.
“With 2 starters leaving, Coach (Dan) Lanning believes that I can come in and make an early impact,” Jones told On3’s Hayes Fawcett when he narrowed the list to his top five schools – Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. “Georgia is one of the best schools at consistently producing outside linebackers and I can definitely see myself playing in Athens.”

Of course Lanning is off to Oregon to be the head coach and won’t be working with Jones any more, but one thing remains the same: the atmosphere in which he’ll be playing.
“Athens is an amazing town, game-day at Georgia is crazy, and it is a great program,” Jones told On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons when previewing his official visit. “There is really nothing else I need to see on this visit. I saw a lot when I was there before and I know about Georgia as a team. I just want to learn more from coach Lanning and about the scheme they run.”
Jones is the second player listed as an EDGE that Georgia has set to join the program. Darris Smith, who announced on Wednesday that he intends to sign with the Bulldogs in February, is also listed as an EDGE at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds. Jones comes in at 6-foot-4, 245 pounds. Meanwhile, five-star defensive lineman Mykel Williams and four-star linebacker Carlton “C.J.” Madden are both likely to play in that EDGE role of Kirby Smart’s Georgia defense.
