One and done: Georgia foward Asa Newell declares for NBA Draft

Asa Newell is heading to the NBA Draft. The 6-foot-11 freshman has announced his intentions after one season in Athens.
Newell signed with Georgia as a five-star recruit. He was the No. 12 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings. That made him Georgia’s highest-ranked signee since Anthony Edwards who went on to be the number one overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft.
The Bulldogs leaned on Newell as they made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015.Newell averaged 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The former five-star made 31 starts in his lone season in Athens.
The freshman dandy was named SEC Freshman of the Week four times and made the SEC’s All-Freshman team this season.

Multiple early NBA mock drafts have Newell as a lottery pick in this summer’s draft.
Georgia head coach Mike White had high praise for Newell late in the season. White felt Newell came in and helped advance Georgia’s culture despite being a freshman and having potential NBA aspirations following the season.
“First and foremost, because Asa’s a great teammate,” White told reporters after Georgia’s win over Vanderbilt. “He possesses a high level of work ethic, consistency, and humility. I hate to wear those words out all year with him, that’s just who he is. Every single day, he’s the same kid. He chases every rebound, and sits in a stance. There are no excuses. He takes coaching from staff, from his teammates. He’s about winning. I think there are a lot of potential pros out there, a lot of potential NCAA guys who are interested in winning and committed to individual accomplishments. He’s committed to both.”
